I stood in the middle of the snowy street as evening fell and gazed down the
dark road which had been abandoned along with me to jinns察fairies察brigands察
thieves察to the grief of fathers and children returning home and to the sorrow
of snow´covered trees。 At the end of the street察 inside Enishte Effendi¨s
grandiose two´story house察beneath the roof察which I can now see through the
bare branches of the chestnut trees察there lives the most beautiful woman in
the world。 But察no察why should I drive myself mad拭

I AM A GOLD COIN
Behold I am a twenty´two´carat Ottoman Sultani gold coin and I bear the
glorious insignia of His Excellency Our Sultan察Refuge of the World。 Here察in
the middle of the night in this fine coffeehouse overe with funereal
melancholy察 Stork察 one of Our Sultan¨s great masters察 has just finished
drawing my picture察though he hasn¨t yet been able to embellish me with gold
wash!I¨ll leave that to your imagination。 My image is here before you察yet I
myself can be found in the money purse of your dear brother察 Stork察 that
illustrious miniaturist。 He¨s rising now察 removing me from his purse and
showing me off to each of you。 Hello察hello察greetings to all the master artists
and assorted guests。 Your eyes widen as you behold my glimmer察you thrill as I
shimmer in the light of the oil lamp察and finally察you bristle with envy at my
owner察 Master Stork。 You¨re justified in behaving so察 for there¨s no better
measure of an illustrator¨s talent than I。
In the past three months察Master Stork has earned exactly forty´seven gold
pieces like myself。 We¨re all in this money´purse and Master Stork察 see for
yourself察 isn¨t hiding us from anyone察 he knows there¨s none among the
miniaturists of Istanbul who earns more than he does。 I take pride in being
recognized as a measure of talent among artists and in putting an end to
unnecessary disagreements。 In the past察before we got used to coffee and our
minds sharpened察 these dim´witted miniaturists weren¨t satisfied with
spending their evenings arguing about who was the most talented or who had
the best sense of color察who could draw the best tree or who was most expert
in the depiction of clouds察 no察 they¨d also e to blows over such issues察
knocking out each other¨s teeth in the process。 Now that my judgment decides
everything察there¨s a sweet harmony in the workshop察and what¨s more察an air
that would suit the old masters of Herat。
In addition to noting the harmony and ambience brought about by my
judgment察let me list for you the various things I might be exchanged for此the
foot of a young and beautiful slave girl察which amounts to about one´fiftieth
of her person察 a good´quality walnut´handled barber¨s mirror察 edges inlaid
with bone察 a well´painted chest of drawers decorated with sunburst designs
and silver leaf worth niy silver pieces察120 fresh loaves of bread察a grave site
and coffins for three察a silver armband察one´tenth of a horse察the legs of an old
and fat concubine察 one buffalo calf察 two high´quality pieces of china察 the
monthly wage of Persian miniaturist Mehmet the Dervish of Tabriz and the
majority of those of his like who work in Our Sultan¨s workshop察 one good

hunting falcon with cage察 ten jugs of Panayot¨s wine察 a heavenly hour with
Mahmut察one of those young boys world´renowned for his beauty察and many
other opportunities too numerous to specify。
Before I arrived here察 I spent ten days in the dirty sock of a poor
shoemaker¨s apprentice。 Each night the unfortunate man would fall asleep in
his bed察naming the endless things he could buy with me。 The lines of this epic
poem察sweet as a lullaby察proved to me that there was no place on Earth a coin
couldn¨t go。
Which reminds me。 If I recited all that happened to me before I came here察
it¨d fill volumes。 There are no strangers among us察we¨re all friends察as long as
you promise not to tell anyone察 and as long as Stork Effendi won¨t take
offense察I¨ll tell you a secret。 Do you swear not to tell拭
All right then察 I confess。 I¨m not a genuine twenty´two´carat Ottoman
Sultani gold coin minted at the Chemberlitash Mint。 I¨m counterfeit。 They
made me in Venice using adulterated gold and brought me here察passing me
off as twenty´two´carat Ottoman gold。 Your sympathy and understanding are
much obliged。
Based on what I could gather from being in the mint in Venice察 this
business has been going on for years。 Until recently察 the debased gold pieces
that the Veian infidels brought to the East and spent were Veian ducats
which they minted in that same mint。 We Ottomans察 forever respectful of
whatever is written察 paid no heed to the amount of gold in each ducat!so
long as the inscription remained the same!and these fake Veian gold
pieces flooded Istanbul。 Later察 noting that coins with less gold and more
copper were harder察 we began to distinguish the coins by biting them。 For
example察you¨re burning with love察you go running to Mahmut察that youth of
unsurpassed beauty察 beloved by all察 first察 he takes into his soft mouth the
coin!not the other thing!and biting it察 declares it counterfeit。 As a
consequence察he¨ll take you to Heaven for only half an hour instead of one full
hour。 The Veian infidels察 realizing that their counterfeit coins presented
such disadvantages察 decided that they might as well counterfeit Ottoman
coins察reasoning that the Ottomans would be fooled again。
Now察let me draw your attention to something quite bizarre此When these
Veian infidels paint察 it¨s as if they¨re not making a painting but actually
creating the object they¨re painting。 When it es to money察however察rather
than making the real thing察they make its counterfeit。
115
We were loaded into iron chests察hauled onto ships and pitching to and fro
traveled from Venice to Istanbul。 I found myself in a money changer¨s shop察in
the garlicky mouth of its proprietor。 We waited for a while察 and a simple´
minded peasant entered察 hoping to exchange some gold。 The master money
changer察who was a genuine trickster察declared that he needed to bite the gold
piece to see if it was counterfeit。 So he took the peasant¨s coin and tossed it
into his mouth。
When we met inside his mouth察 I realized that the peasant¨s coin was a
genuine Ottoman Sultani。 He saw me within that stench of garlic and said察
^You¨re nothing but a counterfeit。 ̄ He was right察 but his arrogant manner
offended my pride and I lied to him此 Actually察 my brother察 you¨re the one
who¨s counterfeit。 ̄
Meanwhile察 the peasant was proudly insisting察 How could my gold coin
possibly be counterfeit拭I buried it in the ground twenty years ago察did a vice
like counterfeiting exist back then拭院
I was wondering what the oute would be when the money changer
took me out of his mouth instead of the peasant¨s gold coin。 ^Take your gold
coin察I don¨t want any vile Veian infidel¨s fake money察院he said察 have you
no shame拭院The peasant responded with some biting words of his own察then
took me with him out the door。 After hearing the same pronouncement from
other money changers察 the peasant¨s spirit broke and he exchanged me as a
debased coin for only niy silver pieces。 This is how my seven´year saga of
endless wandering from hand to hand began。
Allow me to admit proudly that I¨ve spent most of my time in Istanbul
wandering from purse to purse察 and from sash to pocket察 as befits an
intelligent coin。 My worst nightmare is to be stored in a jug and languish for
years beneath a rock察buried in some garden察not that it hasn¨t happened to
me察but for whatever reason察these periods have never lasted long。 Many of the
people who hold me want to be rid of me as soon as possible察especially if they
discover I¨m fake。 Noheless察I have yet to e across someone who¨ll warn
an unsuspecting buyer that I¨m counterfeit。 A broker察not recognizing that I¨m
counterfeit察 who has counted out 120 silver coins in exchange for me察 will
berate himself in fits of anger察sorrow and impatience as soon as he learns he¨s
been cheated察 and these fits won¨t subside until he rids himself of me by
cheating another。 During this crisis察even as he attempts to repeatedly swindle
others察failing each time on account of his haste and anger察he¨ll continue all
the while to curse the ^immoral ̄ person who had originally conned him。

Over the last seven years in Istanbul察 I¨ve changed hands 560 times察 and
there¨s not a house察 shop察 market察 bazaar察 mosque察 church or synagogue I
haven¨t entered。 As I¨ve roamed about察I¨ve learned that much more gossip has
been spread察many more legends told and lies spun in my name than I¨d ever
suspected。 I¨ve constantly had my nose rubbed in it此 Nothing¨s considered
valuable anymore besides me察 I¨m merciless察 I¨m blind察 I myself am even
enamored of money察the unfortunate world revolves around察not God察but me察
and there¨s nothing I can¨t buy!all this is to say nothing of my dirty察vulgar
