Shekure¨s letter wasn¨t meant for Hasan察but for someone else。 What did the
letter say拭 Esther was mad with curiosity察 and in the end察 I did succeed in
reading it。
But alas察we don¨t know each other that well察do we拭To be honest察I was
overe with embarrassment and worry。 How I read the letter you¨ll never
know。 Maybe you¨ll shame and belittle me for my meddling!as if you
yourselves aren¨t as nosy as barbers。 I¨ll just relate to you what I learned from
reading the letter。 This is what sweet Shekure had written此
41
Black Effendi察you¨re a visitor to my house thanks to your close relations with
my father。 But don¨t expect a nod from me。 Much has happened since you left。 I
was wed察and have two strong and spirited sons。 One of them is Orhan察he¨s the
one whom you saw just now e to the workshop。 While I¨ve been awating the
return of my husband these four years察little else has entered my thoughts。 I might
feel lonely察hopeless and weak living with my two children and an elderly father。 I
miss the strength and protection of a man察but let no one assume he might take
advantage of my situation。 Therefore察it would please me if you ceased calling on
us。 You did embarrass me once before察 and afterward察 I had to endure much
suffering to regain my honor in my father¨s eyes Along with this letter察I¨m also
returning the picture you painted and sent to me when you were an impulsive
youth with his wits not yet about him。 I do this so you won¨t harbor any false
hopes or misread any signs。 It¨s a mistake to believe that one could fall in love
gazing at a picture。 It¨d be best if you stopped ing to our house pletely。
My poor Shekure察you¨re neither a nobleman nor a pasha with a fancy seal
to stamp your letter At the bottom of the page察she signed the first letter of
her name察which looked like a small察frightened bird。 Nothing more。
I said ^seal。 ̄ You¨re probably wondering how I open and close these wax´
sealed letters。 But in fact the letters aren¨t sealed at all。 ^That Esther is an
illiterate Jew察院 my dear Shekure had assumed。 ^She¨ll never understand my
writing。 ̄ True察I can¨t read what¨s written察but I can always have someone else
read it。 And as for what¨s not written察I can quite readily ^read ̄ that myself。
Confused察are you拭
Let me put it this way察 so even the most thick´headed of you will
understand此
A letter doesn¨t municate by words alone。 A letter察just like a book察can
be read by smelling it察touching it and fondling it。 Thereby察intelligent folk will
say察 Go on then察read what the letter tells you 院whereas the dull´witted will
say察 Go on then察read what he¨s written 院Listen察now察to what else Shekure
said此
1。 Though I¨ve sent this letter in secret察 by relying on Esther察 who¨s made
letter´delivery a matter of merce and custom察I¨m signifying that I don¨t
intend to conceal that much at all。
42
2。 That I¨ve folded it up like a French pastry implies secrecy and mystery察
true。 But the letter isn¨t sealed and there¨s a huge picture enclosed。 The
apparent implication is察 Pray察keep our secret at all costs察院which more befits
an invitation to love than a letter of rebuke。
3。 Furthermore察 the smell of the letter confirms this interpretation。 The
fragrance was faint enough to be ambiguous!did she intentionally perfume
the letter拭yet alluring enough to fire readers¨ curiosity!is this the aroma of
attar or the smell of her hand拭 And a fragrance察 which was enough to
enrapture the poor man who read the letter to me察will surely have the same
effect on Black。
4。 I am Esther察 who knows neither how to read nor write察 but this I do
know此Although the flow of the script and the handwriting seems to say ^Alas察
I am rushed察 I am writing carelessly and without paying serious attention察院
these letters that twitter elegantly as if caught in a gentle breeze convey the
exact opposite message。 Even her phrase ^just now e ̄ when referring to
Orhan察 implying that the letter was written at that very moment察 betrays a
ploy no less obvious than care taken in each line。
5。 The picture sent along with the letter depicts pretty Shirin gazing at
handsome H┨srev¨s image and falling in love察as told in the story that even I察
Esther the Jewess察 know well。 All the lovelorn ladies of Istanbul adore this
story察but never have I known someone to send an illustration relating to it。
It happens all the time to you fortunate literate people此 A maiden who
can¨t read begs you to read a love letter she¨s received。 The letter is so
surprising察exciting and disturbing that its owner察though embarrassed at your
being privy to her most intimate affairs察ashamed and distraught察asks you
all the same to read it once more。 You read it again。 In the end察you¨ve read the
letter so many times that both of you have memorized it。 Before long察she¨ll
take the letter in her hands and ask察 Did he make that statement there拭院and
^Did he say that here拭院As you point to the appropriate places察she¨ll pore over
those passages察still unable to make sense of the words there。 As she stares at
the curvy letters of the words察sometimes I am so moved I forget that I myself
can¨t read or write and feel the urge to embrace those illiterate maidens whose
tears fall to the page。
Then there are those truly accursed letter´readers察pray察don¨t you turn out
to be like one of them此When the maiden takes the letter in her own hands to
touch it again察desiring to look at it without understanding which words were
43
spoken where察 these beasts will say to her察 What are you trying to do拭 You
can¨t read察 what more do you want to look at拭院 Some of them won¨t even
return the letter察treating it henceforth as if it belonged to them。 At times察the
task of accosting them and retrieving the letter falls to me察Esther。 That¨s the
kind of good woman I am。 If Esther likes you察she¨ll e to your aid as well。

I察SHEKURE
Oh察 why was I there at the window just when Black rode by on his white
steed拭Why did I open the shutters intuitively at that exact moment and stare
at him so long from behind the snowy branches of the pomegranate tree拭 I
can¨t tell you for sure。 I¨d sent word to Esther by way of Hayriye。 I was察 of
course察well aware that Black would take that route。 Meanwhile察I¨d gone up
alone to the room with the built´in closet and the window facing the
pomegranate tree to inspect the sheets in the chest。 On a whim察and at just
the right moment察 I pushed the shutters open with all my strength and
sunlight flooded the room此Standing at the window察I came face´to´face with
Black察who察like the sun察dazzled me。 Oh察it was quite lovely。
He¨d grown and matured and察having lost his awkward youthful lankiness察
he turned out to be a ely man。 Listen Shekure察my heart did tell me察he¨s
not only handsome察 look into his eyes察 he possesses the heart of a child察 so
pure察so alone此Marry him。 I察however察sent him a letter wherein I¨d given him
quite the opposite message。
Though he was twelve years my elder察when I was twelve察I was more mature
than he。 Back then察instead of standing straight and tall before me in a fashion
befitting a man and announcing that he was going to do this or that察 jump
from this spot or climb onto that thing察he¨d just bury his face in some book
or picture察hiding as if everything embarrassed him。 In time察he also fell in love
with me。 He made a painting declaring his love。 We¨d both matured by then。
When I turned twelve察I sensed that Black could no longer look into my eyes察
as if he were afraid I¨d discover he loved me。 ^Hand me that ivory´handled
knife察院he¨d say察for example察looking at the knife but unable to look at me。 If I
asked him察 for instance察 Is the cherry sherbet to your liking拭院 he couldn¨t
simply indicate so with a delicate smile or nod察as we do when our mouths are
full察you see。 Instead察he¨d scream ^Yes ̄ at the top of his lungs察as if trying to
municate with a deaf man。 He feared looking me in the face。 I was a
maiden of striking beauty then。 Any man who caught sight of me even once察
from afar察or from between parted curtains or yawning doors察or even through
the layers of my modest head coverings察immediately became enamored of me。
I¨m not being a braggart察 I¨m explaining this so you¨ll understand my story
and be better able to share in my grief。
In the well´known tale of H┨srev and Shirin察there¨s a moment that Black
and I had discussed at length。 H┨srev¨s friend察Shapur察intends to make H┨srev
and Shirin fall in love。 One day Shirin embarks on a countryside outing with
45
her ladies of the court察 when she sees a picture of H┨srev that Shapur has
secretly hung from the branch of one of the trees beneath which the outing
party has stopped to rest。 Beholding this picture of the handsome H┨srev in
that beautiful garden察 Shirin is stricken by love。 Many paintings depict this
moment!or ^scene ̄ as the miniaturists would have it!consisting of Shirin¨s
look of adoration and bewilderment as she gazes upon the image of H┨srev。
While Black was working with my father察 he¨d seen this picture many times
and had twice made exact copies by eyeing the original as he painted。 After
falling in love with me察he made a copy for himself。 But this time in place of
H┨srev and Shirin察 he portrayed himself and me察 Black and Shekure。 If it
weren¨t for the captions beneath the figures察only I would¨ve known who the
man and maiden in the picture were察because sometimes when we
