Mrs。 McClure took me by the shoulders察guided me to my chair察and told me察 You sit here察
and you stay here 院Then she hauled Miranda and
Shelly outside察scolding them and telling them to find separate bathrooms and clean up while
she ran down the janitor to mop up their mess。
I sat there by myself and didn't even care about covering up。 I just wanted to be with her。 To
talk to her。 To hold her hand again。
To kiss her。
Before school was out察I tried to talk to her again察but every time I got close察she'd dodge me。
And then when the final bell rang察she disappeared。
I looked everywhere for her察but she was just gone。
Garrett察however察wasn't。 He tracked me down and said察 Dude Tell me it isn't true 院
I didn't say a word。 I just headed for the bike racks察still hoping to find Juli。
^Oh察man ´it is true 院
^Leave me alone察Garrett。 ̄
^You get hooked up with the two finest chicks on campus察then bail on them for Juli拭院
^You don't understand。 ̄
^You're right察dude。 I pletely don't understand。 Did you seriously try to kiss her拭I couldn't
believe that part。 We're talking Julianna Baker拭Your
´´´ Page 80´´´
nightmare neighbor拭The know´it´all nuisance拭The coop poop babe拭院
I stopped cold and shoved him。 Just laid into him with both hands and shoved。 ^That was a
long time ago察man。 Knock it off 院
Garrett put both hands up察but moved in at me。 ^Dude察you have flipped察you know that拭院
^Just back off察would you拭院
He blocked my path。 ^I can't believe this Two hours ago you were the man。 The man The
whole school was on their knees before you Now look
at you。 You're察like察a social hazard。 ̄ He snorted and said察 And察dude察the truth is察if you're
gonna be like this察I don't need the association。 ̄
I got right in his face and said察 Good 'Cause you know what拭Neither do I 院
I shoved him aside and ran。
I wound up walking home。 In my pinchy shoes察with dirty dishes clanking inside my sticky
picnic hamper察this basket boy hiked all the way home。
And there was a battle raging inside me。 The old Bryce wanted to go back in time察wanted to
hang with Garrett and shoot the breeze察wanted to
hate Juli Baker again。
Wanted to be the man。
But in my heart I knew the old Bryce was toast。 There was no going back。 Not to Garrett or
Shelly or Miranda or any of the other people who
wouldn't understand。 Juli was different察but after all these years that didn't bother me
anymore。
I liked it。
I liked her。
And every time I saw her察she seemed more beautiful。 She just seemed to glow。 I'm not
talking like a hundred´watt bulb察she just had this warmth
to her。 Maybe it came from climbing that tree。 Maybe it came from singing to chickens。
Maybe it came from whacking at two´by´fours and dreaming
about perpetual motion。 I don't know。 All I know is that pared to her察Shelly and Miranda
seemed so´ordinary。
I'd never felt like this before。 Ever。 And just admitting it to myself instead of hiding from it
made me feel strong。 Happy。 I took off my shoes and
socks and stuffed them in the basket。 My tie whipped over my shoulder as I ran home
barefoot察and I realized that Garrett was right about one thing
! I had flipped。
pletely。
I trucked down our street and spotted her bike lying on its side on the driveway。 She was
home
I rang the bell until I thought it would break。
No answer。
I pounded on her door。
No answer。
I went home and called on the phone察and finally察finally her mother answers。 ^Bryce拭No察I'm
sorry。 She doesn't want to talk。 ̄ Then she whispers察
^Give her a little time察won't you拭院
I gave her an hour。 Almost。 Then I went across the street。 ^Please察Mrs。 Baker。 I've got to
see her 院
^She's locked herself in her room察dear。 Why don't you try phoning tomorrow。 ̄
Tomorrow拭I couldn't wait until tomorrow So I went around the side of their house察climbed
the fence察and knocked on her window。 ^Juli Juli察
please。 I've got to see you。 ̄
Her curtains didn't open察but the back door did察and out came Mrs。 Baker to shoo me away。
When I got home察my granddad was waiting at the front door。 ^Bryce察what is going on拭
You've been running back and forth to the Bakers'察
climbing over their fence´。 You're acting like the world's on fire 院
I blurted察 I can't believe this I just can't believe this She won't talk to me 院
´´´ Page 81´´´
He led me into the front room察saying察 Who won't talk to you拭院
^Juli 院
He hesitated。 ^Is she ´ mad at you拭院
^I don't know 院
^Does she have reason to be mad at you拭院
^No Yes I mean察I don't know 院
^Well察what happened拭院
^I tried to kiss her In front of this whole room of people察while I was supposed to be having
that stupid basket boy lunch with Shelly and Miranda察I
tried to kiss her 院
Slowly a smile spread across his face。 ^You did拭院
^I was察like察possessed。 I couldn't stop myself But she pulled away and´ ̄ I looked out the
window at the Bakers' house。 ^And now she won't talk
to me 院
Very quietly my grandfather said察 Maybe she thinks this is all a little sudden拭院
^But it's not 院
^It's not拭院
^No察I mean ´ ̄ I turned to him。 ^It started with that stupid newspaper article。 And I don't
know´ I've been weirded out ever since。 She doesn't
look the same察she doesn't sound the same察she doesn't even seem like the same person to
me 院I stared out the window at the Bakers'。 ^She's´
she's just different。 ̄
My grandfather stood beside me and looked across the street察too。 ^No察Bryce察院he said softly。
^She's the same as she's always been察you're the
one who's changed。 ̄ He clapped his hand on my shoulder and whispered察 And察son察from
here on out察you'll never be the same again。 ̄
Maybe my grandfather's happy about all this察but I'm miserable。 I can't eat察I can't watch TV察I
can't seem to do anything。
So I went to bed early察but I can't sleep。 I've watched her house from my window for hours
now。 I've stared at the sky察I've counted sheep。 But man察
I can't stop kicking myself for what an idiot I've been all these years。
And now how am I going to make her listen to me拭I'd scale that monster sycamore if I could。
Right to the top。 And I'd yell her name across the
rooftops for the whole world to hear。
And since you know what a tree´climbing weenie I am察I think it's pretty clear that I'm willing
to do anything to get her to talk to me。 Man察I'll dive
after her into a chicken coop full of poop if that's what it takes。 I'll ride my bike all the stinkin'
way to school for the rest of eternity if it means being
with her。
Something。 I've got to e up with some thing to show her that I've changed。 To prove to
her that I understand。
But what拭How do I show her that I'm not the guy she thinks I am拭How do I erase everything
I've done and start over拭
Maybe I can't。 Maybe it just can not be done。 But if I've learned one thing from Juli Baker察it's
that I've got to put my whole heart and soul into it and
try。
Whatever happens察I know that my grandfather's right about one thing。
I'll never be the same again。
The Basket Boys
The Monday after the Loskis' dinner party察Darla tracked me down at school and forced
Bryce Loski back into my brain。 ^Jules Whoa察girl察wait up
How have you been拭院
^I'm fine察Darla察how are you拭院
´´´ Page 82´´´
^No察seriously察院she whispered。 ^Are you doing okay拭院She shifted her backpack and looked
over each shoulder。 ^I got to thinking察you know察that
was just so cold of Bryce。 Especially since you've got that soft spot for him。 ̄
^Who told you that拭院
^Like I haven't got eyes拭e on察girl。 It's a given。 Which is why I got to worryin' about you。
Are you seriously all right拭院
^Yes察I am。 But thanks for thinking about me。 ̄ I eyed her and said察 And Darla拭It's not a
given anymore。 ̄
She laughed。 ^How long's this diet gonna last拭院
^It's not a diet。 I've just察uh察lost my taste for him。 ̄
She looked at me skeptically。 ^Uh´huh。 ̄
^Well察I have。 But thanks for察you know察caring。 ̄
All through first period I was still feeling strong and right and certain察but then Mrs。 Simmons
ended the lesson a full fifteen minutes early and said察
^Clear your desks of everything but a pen or pencil。 ̄
^What拭院everyone cried察and believe me!I was right along with them。 I was not prepared for
a quiz
^Everything 院she said。 ^e on察you're wasting valuable time。 ̄
The room filled with grumbles and the sound of shuffling binders察and when we'd all pretty
much plied with her request察she picked a stack of
bright yellow papers off her desk察fanned them with an evil grin察and said察 It's time to vote for
basket boys 院
A wave of relief swept across the room。 ^Basket boys拭You mean it's not a quiz拭院
She ticked through the stack察counting ballots as she spoke。 ^It is like a quiz in that I don't
want you conferring with one another。 It's also like a quiz
in that you have a limited amount of time。 ̄ She slapped a set of ballots down on the first desk
of row one察then went on to the second row。 ^I will
collect them from you individually when the bell rings察and I will inspect to see that you have
plied with the following instructions。 ̄ She scooted
over to row three。 ^Choose five察and only five察of the boys on the list。 Do not put your name
on it察and do not discuss your choices with your
neighbors。 ̄ She was on to row four now察talking faster and faster。 ^When you've made your
selections察simply turn your sheet over。 ̄ She slapped the
remainder down on the last desk。 ^Do not察I repeat察do not fold your ballot 院
Robbie Castinon raised his hand and blurted out察 Why do guys have
