six years察and there is no excuse for the state they're in。 ̄
^No拭院My grandfather takes a deep breath and seems to weigh things in his mind for a few
seconds。 Then he says察 Tell me this察Rick。 If you had
a brother or sister or child who had a severe mental or physical handicap察what would you
do拭院
It was like my granddad had passed gas in church。 My father's face pinched察his head shook察
and finally he said察 Chet察what does that have to do
with anything拭院
My grandfather looks at him for a minute察then quietly says察 Juli's father has a retarded
brother察and! ̄
My father interrupts him with a laugh。 ^Well察that explains a lot察doesn't it 院
^Explains´a lot拭院my grandfather asks。 Quietly。 Calmly。
´´´ Page 41´´´
^Sure It explains why those people are the way they are ´ 院He grins around the table at us。
^Must run in the family。 ̄
Everyone looks at him。 Lyta's jaw drops察and for once she's speechless。 My mother says察
^Rick 院but all my father can do is laugh a nervous
kind of laugh and say察 It was just a joke I mean察obviously something's wrong with those
people。 Oh察excuse me察Chet。 I forgot。 The girl reminds
you of Ren└e。 ̄
^Rick 院my mother says again察only this time she's mad。
^Oh察Patsy察please。 Your father's being overly dramatic察trying to make me feel bad for
criticizing our neighbors because there's a retarded
relative someplace。 Other people have family troubles and still manage to mow their lawn。
They should have a little pride in ownership察for cryin' out
loud 院
My grandfather's cheeks are seriously flushed察but his voice is rock´steady as he says察 They
don't own that house察Rick。 The landlord is
supposed to maintain the premises察but he doesn't。 And since Juli's father is responsible for
his brother察all their reserves go to his care察and
obviously it doesn't e cheap。 ̄
Very quietly my mom asks察 Don't they have government facilities for that kind of thing拭院
^I don't know the details察Patsy。 Maybe there are no government facilities nearby。 Maybe they
thought a private facility was a better place for him
to be。 ̄
^Still察院my dad says察 there are government facilities available察and if they don't want to go
that route察that's their choice。 It's not our fault their
family had some sort of chromosomal abnormality察and I refuse to feel guilty for wanting ! ̄
My grandfather slams his hand on the table and half´stands as he says察 It had nothing to do
with chromosomes察Rick It was caused by a lack of
oxygen at birth。 ̄ He brings his voice down察but it makes his words seem even more forceful。
^Juli's uncle had the umbilical cord wrapped around his
neck。 Twice。 One minute he was a perfect little baby察just like your son察Bryce察and the next
he was irreversibly damaged。 ̄
My mother was suddenly hysterical。 In seconds she was bawling her eyes out察wailing察and
my father was all over her察trying to calm her down。 It
was no use。 She basically dissolved right there on the spot。
Lyta threw her napkin down and muttered察 This family is a joke察院and took off。 Then my
mother bolted out of the room察sobbing into her hands察
and my father raced after her察throwing my grandfather the wickedest look I'd ever seen。
That left Granddad and me and a table full of cold food。 ^Wow察院I finally said。 ^I had no idea。 ̄
^You still don't察院he told me。
^What do you mean拭院
He sat there like granite for a minute察then leaned across the table toward me and said察 Why
do you suppose that upset your mother so much拭院
^I´I don't know。 ̄ I gave a halfhearted grin and said察 Because she's female拭院
He smiled察but just barely。 ^No。 She's upset because she knows that she could very well be
standing in Mr。 Baker's shoes right now。 ̄
I thought about it a minute and finally asked察 Did her brother have the cord around his neck
when he was born拭院
He shook his head。
^Well察then ´ ̄
He leaned forward even farther and whispered察 You did。 ̄
^I did拭院
He nodded。 ^Twice。 ̄
^But ´ ̄
^The doctor who delivered you was on the ball察plus apparently there was some slack in the
cord察so he was able to loop it off as you came out。
´´´ Page 42´´´
You didn't hang yourself ing into the world察but it could very easily have gone the other
way。 ̄
If I'd been told years or even weeks ago that I'd e down the chute noosed and ready to
hang察I'd have made some kind of joke about it察or
more likely I'd have said察Yeah察that's nice察now can you spare me the discussion拭
But after everything that had happened察I was really freaking out察and I couldn't escape the
questions tidal´waving my brain。 Where would I be if
things had been different拭What would they have done with me拭From the way my dad was
talking察he wouldn't have had much use for me察that's for
sure。 He'd have stuck me in a nuthouse somewhere察any where察and forgotten about me。 But
then I thought察No I'm his kid。 He wouldn't do that ´
would he拭
I looked around at everything we had ! the big house察the white carpet察the antiques and
artwork and stuff that was everywhere。 Would they have
given up all the stuff to make my life more pleasant拭
I doubted it察and man察I doubted it big´time。 I'd have been an embarrassment。 Something to
try to forget about。 How things looked had always
been a biggie to my parents。 Especially to my dad。
Very quietly my granddad said察 You can't dwell on what might have been察Bryce。 ̄ Then察like
he could read my mind察he added察 And it's not fair to
condemn him for something he hasn't done。 ̄
I nodded and tried to get a grip察but I wasn't doing a very good job of it。 Then he said察 By the
way察I appreciated your ment before。 ̄
^What拭院I asked察but my throat was feeling all pinched and swollen。
^About your grandmother。 How did you know that拭院
I shook my head and said察 Juli told me。 ̄
^Oh拭You spoke with her察then拭院
^Yeah。 Actually察I apologized to her。 ̄
^Well´ 院
^And I was feeling a lot better about everything察but now ´ God察I feel like such a jerk again。 ̄
^Don't。 You apologized察and that's what matters。 ̄ He stood up and said察 Say察I'm in the
mood for a walk。 Want to join me拭院
Go for a walk拭What I wanted to do was go to my room察lock the door察and be left alone。
^I find it really helps to clear the mind察院he said察and that's when I realized that this wasn't just
a walk ! this was an invitation to do something
together。
I stood up and said察 Yeah。 Let's get out of here。 ̄
For a guy who'd only basically ever said Pass the salt to me察my granddad turned out to be a
real talker。 We walked our neighborhood and the
next neighborhood and the next neighborhood察and not only did I find out that my granddad
knows a lot of stuff察I found out that the guy is funny。 In a
subtle kind of dry way。 It's the stuff he says察plus the way he says it。 It's really察I don't know察
cool。
As we were winding back into our own territory察we passed by the house that's going up
where the sycamore tree used to be。 My granddad
stopped察looked up into the night察and said察 It must've been a spectacular view。 ̄
I looked up察too察and noticed for the first time that night that you could see the stars。 ^Did you
ever see her up there拭院I asked him。
^Your mother pointed her out to me one time as we drove by。 It scared me to see her up so
high察but after I read the article I understood why she
did it。 ̄ He shook his head。 ^The tree's gone察but she's still got the spark it gave her。 Know
what I mean拭院
Luckily I didn't have to answer。 He just grinned and said察 Some of us get dipped in flat察some
in satin察some in gloss´。 ̄ He turned to me。 ^But
´´´ Page 43´´´
every once in a while you find someone who's iridescent察and when you do察nothing will ever
pare。 ̄
As we walked up to our front porch察my grandfather put his arm around my shoulder and said察
^It was nice walking with you察Bryce。 I enjoyed
myself very much。 ̄
^Me too察院I told him察and we went inside。
Right away we knew we'd stepped into a war zone。 And even though no one was yelling or
crying察from the look on my parents' faces I could tell
there'd been a major meltdown while my granddad and I were out。
Granddad whispered to me察 I've got another fence to mend察I'm afraid察院and headed into the
dining room to talk to my parents。
I wanted nothing to do with that vibe。 I went straight to my room察closed the door察and flopped
through the darkness onto my bed。
I lay there awhile and let the dinner disaster play through my mind。 And when I'd totally
burned a fuse thinking about it察I sat up and looked out the
window。 There was a light on somewhere inside the Bakers' house and the streetlights were
glowing察but the night still seemed really dense。 Like it
was darker than usual and察I don't know察heavy。
I leaned closer to the window and looked up into the sky察but I couldn't see the stars anymore。
I wondered if Juli had ever been in the sycamore at
night。 Among the stars。
I shook my head。 Flat察glossy察iridescent。 What was up with that拭Juli Baker had always
seemed just plain dusty to me。
I snapped on my desk lamp and dug the newspaper with the article about Juli out of the
drawer where I'd tossed it。
Just like I thought ! they made it sound like Juli was trying to save Mount Rushmore or
something。 They called her a ^strong voice in an urban
wilderness ̄ and ^a radiant beacon察shedding light on the need to curtail continued
overdevelopment of our once quaint and tranquil munity。 ̄
Spare me。 I mean察what's wrong with letting a guy cut down a tree on his own property so he
can build a house拭His lot察his tree察his decision。
End of story。 The p
