he snow first began to burden us。 If we could reachthat point察maybe it would prove easier beyond。 It is no more than a furlongoff察I guess。'
`Then let us force a path thither察you and I' said Aragorn。
Aragorn was the tallest of the pany察but Boromir察little less inheight察was broader and heavier in build。 He led the way察and Aragorn followedhim。 Slowly they moved off察and were soon toiling heavily。 In places the snowwas breast´high察and often Boromir seemed to bc swimming or burrowing with hisgreat arms rather than walking。
Legolas watched them for a while with a smile upon his lips察and then heturned to the others。 `The strongest must seek a way察say you拭But I say此leta ploughman plough察but choose an otter for swimming察and for running lightover grass and leaf or over snow´an Elf。'
With that he sprang forth nimbly察and then Frodo noticed as if for thefirst time察though he had long known it察that the Elf had no boots察but woreonly light shoes察as he always did察and his feet made little imprint in thesnow。
'Farewell' he said to Gandalf。 `I go to find the Sun' Then swift as arunner over firm sand he shot away察and quickly overtaking the toiling men察
with a wave of his hand he passed them察and sped into the distance察andvanished round the rocky turn。
The others waited huddled together察watching until Boromir and Aragorndwindled into black specks in the whiteness。 At length they too passed fromsight。 The time dragged on。 The clouds lowered察and now a few flakes of snowcame curling down again。
An hour察maybe察went by察though it seemed far longer察and then at lastthey saw Legolas ing back。 At the same time Boromir and Aragorn reappearedround the bend far behind him and came labouring up the slope。
`Well' cried Legolas as he ran up察 I have not brought the Sun。 She iswalking in the blue fields of the South察and a little wreath of snow on thisRedhorn hillock troubles her not at all。 But I have brought back a gleam ofgood hope for those who are doomed to go on feet。 There is the greatest wind´
drift of all just beyond the turn察and there our Strong Men were almostburied。 They despaired察until I returned and told them that the drift waslittle wider than a wall。 And on the other side the snow suddenly grows less察
while further down it is no more than a white coverlet to cool a hobbit's
toes。'
`Ah察it is as I said' growled Gimli。 'It was no ordinary storm。 It is

the ill will of Caradhras。 He does not love Elves and Dwarves察and that driftwas laid to cut off our escape。'
'But happily your Caradhras has forgotten that you have Men with you'
said Boromir察who came up at that moment。 `And doughty Men too察if I may sayit察though lesser men with spades might have served you better。 Still察we havethrust a lane through the drift察and for that all here may be grateful whocannot run as light as Elves。'
`But how are we to get down there察even if you have cut through thedrift' said Pippin察voicing the thought of all the hobbits。
'Have hope' said Boromir。 'I am weary察but I still have some strengthleft察and Aragorn too。 We will bear the little folk。 The others no doubt willmake shift to tread the path behind us。 e察Master Peregrin I will beginwith you。'
He lifted up the hobbit。 'Cling to my back I shall need my arms' he saidand strode forward。 Aragorn with Merry came behind。 Pippin marvelled at hisstrength察seeing the passage that he had already forced with no other toolthan his great limbs。 Even now察burdened as he was察he was widening the trackfor those who followed察thrusting the snow aside as he went。
They came at length to the great drift。 It was flung across the mountain´
path like a sheer and sudden wall察and its crest察sharp as if shaped withknives察reared up more than twice the height of Boromir察but through themiddle a passage had been beaten察rising and falling like a bridge。 On the farside Merry and Pippin were set down察and there they waited with Legolas forthe rest of the pany to arrive。
After a while Boromir returned carrying Sam。 Behind in the narrow but nowwell´trodden track came Gandalf察leading Bill with Gimli perched among thebaggage。 Last came Aragorn carrying Frodo。 They passed through the lane察buthardly had Frodo touched the ground when with a deep rumble there rolled downa fall of stones and slithering snow。 The spray of it half blinded the panyas they crouched against the cliff察and when the air cleared again they sawthat the path was blocked behind them。
`Enough察enough' cried Gimli。 'We are departing as quickly as we may'
And indeed with that last stroke the malice of the mountain seemed to be
expended察as if Caradhras was satisfied that the invaders had been beaten offand would not dare to return。 The threat of snow lifted察the clouds began tobreak and the light grew broader。
As Legolas had reported察they found that the snow became steadily moreshallow as they went down察so that even the hobbits could trudge along。 Soonthey all stood once more on the flat shelf at the head of the steep slopewhere they had felt the first flakes of snow the night before。
The morning was now far advanced。 From the high place they looked backwestwards over the lower lands。 Far away in the tumble of country that lay atthe foot of the mountain was the dell from which they had started to climb thepass。
Frodo's legs ached。 He was chilled to the bone and hungry察and his headwas dizzy as he thought of the long and painful march downhill。 Black specksswam before his eyes。 He rubbed them察but the black specks remained。 In thedistance below him察but still high above the lower foothills察dark dots werecircling in the air。
`The birds again' said Aragorn察pointing down。
'That cannot be helped now' said Gandalf。 `Whether they are good orevil察or have nothing to do with us at all察we must go down at once。 Not evenon the knees of Caradhras will we wait for another night´fall'
A cold wind flowed down behind them察as they turned their backs on theRedhorn Gate察and stumbled wearily down the slope。 Caradhras had defeatedthem。
_Chapter 4_
A Journey in the Dark

It was evening察and the grey light was again waning fast察when theyhalted for the night。 They were very weary。 The mountains were veiled indeepening dusk察and the wind was cold。 Gandalf spared them one more mouthfuleach of the miruvor of Rivendell。 When they had eaten some food he called acouncil。
'We cannot察of course察go on again tonight' he said。 `The attack on theRedhorn Gate has tired us out察and we must rest here for a while。'
`And then where are we to go拭' asked Frodo。
'We still have our journey and our errand before us' answered Gandalf。
`We have no choice but to go on察or to return to Rivendell。'
Pippin's face brightened visibly at the mere mention of return toRivendell察Merry and Sam looked up hopefully。 But Aragorn and Boromir made nosign。 Frodo looked troubled。
`I wish I was back there' he said。 `But how can I return without shame C
unless there is indeed no other way察and we are already defeated拭'
`You are right察Frodo' said Gandalf此 to go back is to admit defeat andface worse defeat to e。 If we go back now察then the Ring must remain there此
we shall not be able to set out again。 Then sooner or later Rivendell will bebesieged察and after a brief and bitter time it will be destroyed。 TheRingwraiths are deadly enemies察but they are only shadows yet of the power andterror they would possess if the Ruling Ring was on their master's handagain。'
'Then we must go on察if there is a way' said Frodo with a sigh。 Sam sankback into gloom。
`There is a way that we may attempt' said Gandalf。 `I thought from thebeginning察when first I considered this journey察that we should try it。 But itis not a pleasant way察and I have not spoken of it to the pany before。
Aragorn was against it察until the pass over the mountains had at least beentried。'
`If it is a worse road than the Redhorn Gate察then it must be evilindeed' said Merry。 `But you had better tell us about it察and let us know theworst at once。'
'The road that I speak of leads to the Mines of Moria' said Gandalf。
Only Gimli lifted up his head察a smouldering fire was in his eyes。 On all theothers a dread fell at the mention of that name。 Even to the hobbits it was a
legend of vague fear此
`The road may lead to Moria察but how can we hope that it will leadthrough Moria拭' said Aragorn darkly。
`It is a name of ill omen' said Boromir。 `Nor do I see the need to gothere。 If we cannot cross the mountains察let us journey southwards察until wee to the Gap of Rohan察where men are friendly to my people察taking the roadthat I followed on my way hither。 Or we might pass by and cross the Isen intoLangstrand and Lebennin察and so e to Gondor from the regions nigh to thesea。'
'Things have changed since you came north察Boromir' answered Gandalf。
'Did you not hear what I told you of Saruman拭With him I may have business ofmy own ere all is over。 But the Ring must not e near Isengard察if that canby any means be prevented。 The Gap of Rohan is closed to us while we go withthe Bearer。
'As for the longer road此we cannot afford the time。 We might spend a yearin such a journey察and we should pass through many lands that are empty andharbourless。 Yet they would not be safe。 The watchful eyes both of Saruman andof the Enemy are on them。 When you came north察Boromir察you were in theEnemy's eyes only one stray wanderer from the South and a matter of smallconcern to him此his mind was busy with the pursuit of the Ring。 But you returnnow as a member of the Ring's pany察and you are in peril as long as youremain with us。 The danger will increase with every league that we go southunder the naked sky。
`Since our open attempt on the mountain´pass our plight has bee more

desperate察I fear。 I see now little hope察if we do not soon vanish from sightfor a while察and cover our trail。 Therefore I advise that we should go neitherover the mountains察nor round them察but under them。 That is a road at any ratethat the Enemy will least expect us to take。'
`We do not know what he expects' said Boromir。 `He may watch all roads察
likely and unlikely。 In that case to enter Moria would be to walk into a trap察
hardly better than knocking at the gates of the Dark To
