`From the first my heart misgave me察against all reason that I knew'
said Gandalf察 and I desired to know how this thing came to Gollum察and howlong he had possessed it。 So I set a watch for him察guessing that he would erelong e forth from his darkness to seek for his treasure。 He came察but heescaped and was not found。 And then alas I let the matter rest察watching andwaiting only察as we have too often done。
`Time passed with many cares察until my doubts were awakened again tosudden fear。 Whence came the hobbit's ring拭What察if my fear was true察shouldbe done with it拭Those things I must decide。 But I spoke yet of my dread tonone察knowing the peril of an untimely whisper察if it went astray。 In all thelong wars with the Dark Tower treason has ever been our greatest foe。
'That was seventeen years ago。 Soon I became aware that spies of manysorts察even beasts and birds察were gathered round the Shire察and my fear grew。
I called for the help of the D┣nedain察and their watch was doubled察and Iopened my heart to Aragorn察the heir of Isildur。'
`And I' said Aragorn察 counselled that we should hunt for Gollum。 toolate though it may seem。 And since it seemed fit that Isildur's heir shouldlabour to repair Isildur's fault察I went with Gandalf on the long and hopelesssearch。'
Then Gandalf told how they had explored the whole length of Wilderland察

down even to the Mountains of Shadow and the fences of Mordor。 `There we had
rumour of him察and we guess that he dwelt there long in the dark hills察but wenever found him察and at last I despaired。 And then in my despair I thoughtagain of a test that might make the finding of Gollum unneeded。 The ringitself might tell if it were the One。 The memory of words at the Council cameback to me此words of Saruman察half´heeded at the time。 I heard them nowclearly in my heart。
` ;The Nine察the Seven察and the Three察─he said察 had each their propergem。 Not so the One。 It was round and unadorned察as it were one of the lesserrings察but its maker set marks upon it that the skilled察maybe察could stillsee and read。;
`What those marks were he had not said。 Who now would know拭The maker。
And Saruman拭But great though his lore may be察it must have a source。 Whathand save Sauron's ever held this thing察ere it was lost拭The hand of Isilduralone。
`With that thought察I forsook the chase察and passed swiftly to Gondor。 Informer days the members of my order had been well received there察but Sarumanmost of all。 Often he had been for long the guest of the Lords of the City。
Less wele did the Lord Denethor show me then than of old察and grudgingly hepermitted me to search among his hoarded scrolls and books。
' ;If indeed you look only察as you say察for records of ancient days察andthe beginnings of the City察read on  ─he said。 ;For to me what was is lessdark than what is to e察and that is my care。 But unless you have more skilleven than Saruman察who has studied here long察you will find naught that is notwell known to me察who am master of the lore of this City。;
`So said Denethor。 And yet there lie in his hoards many records that fewnow can read察even of the lore´masters察for their scripts and tongues havebee dark to later men。 And Boromir察there lies in Minas Tirith still察
unread察I guess察by any save Saruman and myself since the kings failed察ascroll that Isildur made himself。 For Isildur did not march away straight fromthe war in Mordor察as some have told the tale。'
'Some in the North察maybe' Boromir broke in。 'All know in Gondor that hewent first to Minas Anor and dwelt a while with his nephew Meneldil察
instructing him察before he mitted to him the rule of the South Kingdom。 Inthat time he planted there the last sapling of the White Tree in memory of hisbrother。'
`But in that time also he made this scroll' said Gandalf察 and that isnot remembered in Gondor察it would seem。 For this scroll concerns the Ring察
and thus wrote Isildur therein此
_The Great Ring shall go now to be an heirloom of the North Kingdom察butrecords of it shall be left in Gondor察where also dwell the heirs of Elendil察
lest a time e when the memory of these great matters shall grow dim。_
`And after these words Isildur described the Ring察such as he found it。
_It was hot when I first took it察hot as a glede察and my hand wasscorched察so that I doubt if ever again I shall be free of the pain of it。 Yeteven as I write it is cooled察and it seemeth to shrink察though it losethneither its beauty nor its shape。 Already the writing upon it察which at firstwas as clear as red flame察fadeth and is now only barely to be read。 It isfashioned in an elven´script of Eregion察for they have no letters in Mordorfor such subtle work察but the language is unknown to me。 I deem it to be atongue of the Black Land察since it is foul and uncouth。 What evil it saith Ido not know察but I trace here a copy of it察lest it fade beyond recall。 TheRing misseth察maybe察the heat of Sauron's hand察which was black and yet burnedlike fire察and so Gil´galad was destroyed察and maybe were the gold made hot

again察the writing would be refreshed。 But for my part I will risk no hurt tothis thing此of all the works of Sauron the only fair。 It is precious to me察
though I buy it with great pain。_
'When I read these words察my quest was ended。 For the traced writing wasindeed as Isildur guessed察in the tongue of Mordor and the servants of theTower。 And what was said therein was already known。 For in the day that Sauronfirst put on the One察Celebrimbor察maker of the Three察was aware of him察andfrom afar he heard him speak these words察and so his evil purposes wererevealed。
`At once I took my leave of Denethor察but even as I went northwards察
messages came to me out of L┏rien that Aragorn had passed that way察and thathe had found the creature called Gollum。 Therefore I went first to meet him
and hear his tale。 Into what deadly perils he had gone alone I dared notguess。'
`There is little need to tell of them' said Aragorn。 `If a man mustneeds walk in sight of the Black Gate察or tread the deadly flowers of MorgulVale察then perils he will have。 I察too察despaired at last察and I began myhomeward journey。 And then察by fortune察I came suddenly on what I sought此themarks of soft feet beside a muddy pool。 But now the trail was fresh and swift察
and it led not to Mordor but away。 Along the skirts of the Dead Marshes Ifollowed it察and then I had him。 Lurking by a stagnant mere察peering in thewater as the dark eve fell察I caught him察Gollum。 He was covered with greenslime。 He will never love me察I fear察for he bit me察and I was not gentle。
Nothing more did I ever get from his mouth than the marks of his teeth。 Ideemed it the worst part of all my journey察the road back察watching him dayand night察making him walk before me with a halter on his neck察gagged察untilhe was tamed by lack of drink and food察driving him ever towards Mirkwood。 Ibrought him there at last and gave him to the Elves察for we had agreed thatthis should be done察and I was glad to be rid of his pany察for he stank。
For my part I hope never to look upon him again察but Gandalf came and enduredlong speech with him。'
`Yes察long and weary' said Gandalf察 but not without profit。 For onething察the tale he told of his loss agreed with that which Bilbo has now toldopenly for the first time察but that mattered little察since I had alreadyguessed it。 But I learned then first that Gollum's ring came out of the GreatRiver nigh to the Gladden Fields。 And I learned also that he had possessed itlong。 Many lives of his small kind。 The power of the ring had lengthened hisyears far beyond their span察but that power only the Great Rings wield。
`And if that is not proof enough察Galdor察there is the other test that Ispoke of。 Upon this very ring which you have here seen held aloft察round andunadorned察the letters that Isildur reported may still be read察if one has thestrength of will to set the golden thing in the fire a while。 That I havedone察and this I have read此
_Ash nazg durbatul。k察ash nazg gimbatul察ash nazg thrakatul。kagh burzum´ishi krimpatul。'_
The change in the wizard's voice was astounding。 Suddenly it becamemenacing察powerful察harsh as stone。 A shadow seemed to pass over the high sun察
and the porch for a moment grew dark。 All trembled察and the Elves stoppedtheir ears。
`Never before has any voice dared to utter the words of that tongue inImladris察Gandalf the Grey' said Elrond察as the shadow passed and the panybreathed once more。
`And let us hope that none will ever speak it here again' answeredGandalf。 `Nonetheless I do not ask your pardon察Master Elrond。 For if thattongue is not soon to be heard in every corner of the West察then let all putdoubt aside that this thing is indeed what the Wise have declared此the

treasure of the Enemy察fraught with all his malice察and in it lies a greatpart of his strength of old。 Out of the Black Years e the words that theSmiths of Eregion heard察and knew that they had been betrayed此
_One Ring to rule them all察One Ring to find them察One Ringto bring them all and in the Darkness bind them。_
`Know also察my friends察that I learned more yet from Gollum。 He was lothto speak and his tale was unclear察but it is beyond all doubt that he went toMordor察and there all that he knew was forced from him。 Thus the Enemy knowsnow that the One is found察that it was long in the Shire察and since hisservants have pursued it almost to our door察he soon will know察already he mayknow察even as I speak察that we have it here。'
All sat silent for a while察until at length Boromir spoke。 `He is a smallthing察you say察this Gollum拭Small察but great in mischief。 What became of him拭
To what doom did you put him'
'He is in prison察but no worse' said Aragorn。 `He had suffered much。
There is no doubt that he was tormented察and the fear of Sauron lies black onhis heart。 Still I for one am glad that he is safely kept by the watchfulElves of Mirkwood。 His malice is great and gives him a strength hardly to bebelieved in one so lean and withered。 He could work much mischief still察if hewere free。 And I do not doubt that he was allowed to leave Mordor on some evil
errand。'
`Alas alas' cried Legolas察and in his fair elvish face there was greatdistress。 `The tid
